Jazz in black and white

From time to time, I am lucky enough to play a gig with Brisbane vocalist Trina Lincoln and her band Held To Ransom. These pics are from a 2015 gig we did, and I’ve been meaning to share them on the blog for some time now.  I think the black and white pics capture the feel of the gig best.  I’ve left them untitled as they pretty much speak for themselves.  I hope you like them.

Renoir’s Cat at QUT Theatre

Hi everyone.  This Thursday evening, 20 November, we – that is, Renoir’s Cat – will be back at the QUT Theatre playing some great jazz for their Season 2014 Launch Party.  This is always a great gig, in a wonderful location overlooking the gardens.  Take a look here for the booking details.  It’s the theatre’s 10th birthday so it should be a fun night.  Hope to see you there.

Big Band Gig on the Sunshine Coast, 1 November

New Groove Jazz Ensemble

This Saturday night, 1 November, I’ll be gigging with my musical buddies in the New Groove Jazz Ensemble at Buddina on the Sunshine Coast. This is a great band with an awesome sound that you can only get from a large (18 piece) ensemble. We’ll be playing at the Kawana Community Hall at Nanyima St, Buddina. Most of our gigs are in Brisbane, and this is our first performance on the Sunny Coast – can’t wait. The Sunshine Coast Jazz Club’s Facebook page has all the details.

Jazz at QUT Theatre with Renoir’s Cat

A little late with this post, but here we are at last.  Late in 2013 I joined my tremendously talented musical buddies in Renoir’s Cat for our annual gig at the QUT Theatre season opening party.

This was our 4th – or was it 5th? – time at this event, and it’s always a pleasure to play some jazz for the theatre cognoscenti at this great venue.

This particular gig doesn’t include any vocals.  We’ve been joined in the past by superb vocalists like Natalie de Jager and Laura Meldon, but this time around we dipped into our collection of ‘bop and beyond’ instrumentals.  This includes pieces by Sonny Rollins (Doxy, St Thomas), Miles Davis (So What, All Blues), Thelonious Monk (Well You Needn’t, Bolivar Ba-Lues Are), Steely Dan (Babylon Sisters, Deacon Blues), Pat Metheny (James), Chick Corea (Spain).  All very fun stuff to play.

The photography you see here is a small sample of the pics taken that evening by the brilliant Tafline Hoey.  Thanks Tafline, love your work.

If you’d like to contact us Cats about gigs in the greater Brisbane area – or even beyond, please drop us a line at renoirscat@hotmail.com.  We’d love to hear from you.
